This page is for the cataloging of known species seen in the game.

Criteria: Must be a species appeared more than once in-game, preferably as a non-hostile entity but does not need to be alive. For unique NPCs of indeterminate species, they can be listed on the Miscellaneous NPCs page.

Unique NPCs[]

The ancients

These four species are shown in the opening cinematic and are implied to be responsible for the creation of The Immortal Cell through their past cooperation.

It is also possible that these represent abstractions: either of the species as a whole or of groups within these species who contributed to the collaborative creation of the Immortal Cell.

They share species with four of the major species found throughout the World.

Blu[]

The "Blu" as Heart Machine currently nicknames them, is a species of humanoid, tall, lean, muscular, feline blue-furred beings that herald from the continent known as the Northern Realms on the planet known as the World of Light, northwest of the Land of Light, the continent/country that Hyper Light Drifter is set in.

The Blu have long, side, pointy ears that can both be positioner to lay down floppily and stand up straight, and have hair on top of their head. They have long claw-like dark blue nails at the end of their five fingertips. They are found in two known colors, a darker cyan blue and a lighter variant, and have been known to sport lighter blue and even white patches in some areas of their body, mostly their feet, hands, around their neck, face, on their chests and on the inside of their ears. They tend to have magenta irises with blue-purple pupils but have been known to have nearly all-black eyes as well, as evidenced by the Drifter.

In the Land of Light the Blu are rare and inhabit no particular region, as they are alien to those lands, but they are known to be found in the Divine Path region in the north, the Midnight Woods region in the west, and the Wastes in the south, with one additional specimen in the central town. All but one currently observable specimens are preserved in cryostatic hard light crystal. All of them, safe for lone man in the central town, are wearing soldier's uniforms and holding weapons.

The Drunk

The Drifter is of this species.

The species of the Blu were not revealed to be feline or to have fur, nor was it revealed that the protrusions coming out of their head were cat ears, until it was revealed that a blue species nicknamed "Blu" by Heart Machine would appear as a playable species in the studio's upcoming 2023 game, Hyper Light Breaker, and then subsequently it was confirmed that this species was the same blue-skinned beings seen in Hyper Light Drifter. For a long time, since many specimen are found in vats in the underground labs of the Wastes, it was theorized that the Drifter's blue species was artificially created for war, but with the revelation it was also stated by Alx Preston, head of Heart Machine and creator of all their three games, that the Drifter was not an artificial being. This, then, naturally apply to others of his species. It was also with the revelation of the Blu species for Breaked that we were told that the species heralded from the continent known as the Northern Realms.

Friendly NPC locations: The Drunk in Central Town and the Hiker located in the North are the only known living Blue-Folk in the world.

Other appearances: A large number of them can be found frozen in crystal in The West, often bleeding from the face and clutching their weapons. Many are also found in labs in The South, floating in tubes of pink liquid--it is unknown if they are dead or simply in suspended animation.

Dirks[]

Green-colored beasts that can be found in all regions. For more information, see the Dirk page.

Defining features: Green skin, white eyes, large arms with sharp claws, small protrusions (horns or ears) on head (always covered by helmet)

Labs lineup

Non-hostile appearances: Several can be found floating in tubes of pink liquid in the south, in a lineup that seemingly suggest they either mutated from, or mutated into, the blue-folk.

A dead Dirk can also be found along with a dead Crystal Wolf at the butcher shop in Central Town.

Others[]

Frog-folk[]

Amphibian humanoids that inhabit The East.

Bomber Toad

Defining features: Large Eyes. Can come in a range of colors (green, purple, pink). All frogs have orange blood. Croak sound effect when conversed to.

The Ninja Toad, Bomber Toad and The Emperor are all enemies in the Eastern zone.

Snails[]

Small snails that can be found in Central Town and an island in The East.
